HELPFUL TIPS

Included are tips about how to improve cell phone usage while you are on The Big Island

If you have any helpful tips please send them in to us.

One of the things I have noticed that happens to kids when they come to the Big Island is that their eating and sleeping patterns change. They sometimes eat less food but increase their liquid intake during the first couple of days while they adjust to the climate change. This is normal.
More liquids keep them hydrated which is very important for them while they are here.

Back home kids are used to a different time schedule then they are here.
I often get reports from parents saying that their kids were up at 5am and ready to go while the parents were exhausted from the trip and just wanted to sleep in. Be ready for it.
If the kids are old enough, set out some cereal for them to get for themselves in the morning and maybe have some new books set out for them or a movie they can quietly watch until you are ready to get up. If they are younger have their necessities close at hand and ready to use so that you don't have to dig through suitcases to find them.

Don't forget your stroller. Try to rent any equipment such as a stroller in advance so the equipment can be there when you arrive (If Hotels/Resorts allow it) or shortly afterward.

Always remember to call us with your room number, condo unit number etc as soon as you arrive. Because of security reasons the hotels and resorts do not give out this information. In order for your nanny to find you we have to know where you are.

CELL PHONES

On the Big Island there are still many places where cell phone reception is poor and sometimes non-existent. Even at the major Hotels you can be standing on the lanai and get perfect reception and then move into your room where the phone will go dead.
Here is a short list of what you can do to insure that your important messages get through to the people they are intended for.

1. Try to call to make or break reservations from a land line as a back up to your cell.
2. If you do not hear back from the people you tried to contact by cell they may have received a garbled or partial message or the message may have been dropped. Also, sometimes the messages don't drop down right away to the other phone. Don't assume that someone has received your message and try again if you don't hear back from them.
3. Make sure your battery is charged.

Things that happen to Cell Phones on the Big Island.
1. You lock your cell phone in the rental car along with your keys.
2. You leave your cell phone at the restaurant, pool, beach, etc.
3. You lose your cell phone somewhere?
4. Your two year old throws your cell phone in the pool, ocean, from the fifth floor lanai, etc.
5. You forget to bring your cell phone with you and find yourself lost (in the middle of a lava field, rain forest, or just on some road you decided to follow). This actually happened to four local boys who ended up having to spend the night in the mountains because it was to dark to find their way back by the time they decided to return home.
6. You finally get fed up with your cell phone altogether and fling it into the surf while doing a happy dance in the sand!
All kidding aside, these are real scenarios and cell phones are expensive to replace so hopefully this will be a good reminder for cell phone users while they are on vacation.

Marla,
We recently met you at the Kona Coast Resort during our stay on The Big Island. Our son has problems with ear infections and you inquired about the headband he was wearing to protect his ears. You wanted to know where they were available and we said we would get in contact with the company and let you know. The company is Ear Band-it and their website to preview their product is www.earbandit.com. They look kind of silly on but they are a blessing for kids that have ear problems and want to continue to be able to swim. It was nice meeting you and we enjoyed your Island. Take care and God Bless.
