Quotes From Vivienne

Quotes From Vivienne

Every now and again life will send us a special gift. One came to me just recently in the form of a 6year old named Vivienne. I had the opportunity to spend some time with her while her family was on vacation visiting the Big Island. Much of the time I found myself hunting for a pen or a crayon so I could write down what Vivienne was saying so I lost a few gems along the way. On the up side I was able to get a few quotes from some of our conversations.

It was morning and I was talking to Vivienne about being a leader. We were talking about being powerful and while standing between me and the Barbie dolls Vivienne whirled around to look at me and said "You can’t say I’m powerful and you’re not because that’s not being powerful". My jaw dropped. How could she know that at 6.

We were talking about good and bad behavior and how some people were good and others were not so good. I had told Vivienne a few stories about my cousin who had a bit of a dark side when it came to sharing with others. In fact she was downright mean. Vivienne said after hearing one of the stories "Maybe she just wasn’t loved enough". Vivienne said that the people who were not so good often caused so much pain to others especially their moms. Then almost in the same breath she said "Why give life to criminals when instead we could be giving life to new Presidents". What a play on words and what insight!

Vivienne and I talked about many things while she was here. We talked about children in other countries that didn’t have enough food. At one point she brought up Iraq and said "Let’s say a child doesn’t have enough food in Iraq. If we know about it we should help them". I responded with "But what about the children that don’t have enough food who live in America? Many of them don’t get enough to eat. Why are we the ones who always have to help the other countries? Why don’t we just make our own country ok? Her answer amazed me. She took just a moment to gather her thoughts and then answered "Because we are the SO MUCH country God put us in charge and if we don’t start helping other people our responsibility will be taken away along with our abundance" You could have knocked me over with a feather. I love this child.

Vivienne represents so many wonderful children from this new generation. All she does is be herself and say what she believes to be true. Instead of always programming the children with our values why not let them program us with some of theirs. Be on the lookout for the Vivienne in your child! All you have to do is ask the right questions and then LISTEN!
